I grew up in Melbourne, Florida, in a time when many parts of the south were still functionally, if not legally, segregated.  Melbourne was one such area.

In regards to race, my dad was often much more open-minded than his contemporaries.  Even so, he has (and still does -- much to my disgust) make racially charged comments or "jokes."  But -- even with his faults -- my dad has always showed basic fairness when dealing with people, especially as individuals.

While reading some of the political blogs, I keep coming across comments that talk about how we need to focus on business.  Get business back on track.  Make it easier for businesses to be profitable.  Do that and all will be well...

Lately I've found myself spending a pretty fair amount of time with people who think much like I do -- hopeful people who believe things can be better.  It's been nice.  I feel uplifted when I'm around folks who believe that we can come together and make a difference -- that hope is not dead.
