The Gay Stuff

Somewhere between 6 and 10 percent of the population is gay.

Despite what some people believe, being gay is not a choice, a lifestyle, or a perversion of nature.

Homosexual behavior does not make one homosexual.  Likewise, heterosexual behavior does not make one heterosexual. In other words, no matter how many women a gay man sleeps with, he's still gay. Even if he's celibate, he's still gay.

Homosexual behavior has been noted in many animal species -- so how is it "unnatural?"

Homosexuality is not a disease, therefore it cannot be "cured."

Yup, that's right. I'm gay.

So, you might be asking yourself why I would want to share that with you. That's a very good question, actually. The truth is, I wish it didn't matter. I wish I didn't feel the need to share with you that particular detail of my life.

However, I think it's important for people to know. Our society tends to equate secrecy with shame. If I have something to hide, the likelihood is that whatever it is I'm hiding is something that is perceived as bad, damaging, or in some other way to be ashamed of. Extending that conceptualization, if I feel the need to hide my sexual orientation, it stands to reason that it is something I'm ashamed of. And, therefore, if I'm ashamed of it, it must be bad. So, I share it -- in order to get it out in the open. Who I am is not a shameful thing.  Being gay is neither good nor bad -- it is simply a fact.

As I develop this section of my site, my hope is to stimulate discussion -- on both sides of whichever issue happens to be on the plate at the moment. We are who we are. It's what we do with our lives that shows what kind of person we are.
